Sometimes called the '''Cathari''', were a [[Manichaen]] sect very similar to the [[Albigenses]] (found in Western Europe, Northern Italy, France, Germany, and Flanders). They flourished chiefly in the 11th and 12th centuries in the Languedoc region of southern France. Pope Innocent III proclaimed a crusade against them and destroyed their stronghold of Montsegur. When asked how to distinguish between Cathars and Catholics, the commander was said to have directed his troops to "kill them all, God will know his own". The seige of Montsegur was the beginning of the Inquisition that would last for centuries.

The beliefs of the Cathars diverged from the Roman Church on many points. In addition to keeping a strict vegetarian diet and a pacifist attitude towards outsiders, they also held unorthodox views on sex. A strong belief in the superiority of the spiritual realm to the material inspired them to remain abstinent from sex, believing that the trapping of a soul within flesh was an abomination. Unlike the Roman Church, the Cathars accepted women into the priesthood, members of which were called Perfecti and known by their white robes.

The spiritual legacy of the Cathars includes the trouvere tradition and the codes of courtly love. The unrequited longing of romantic love reveal the roots of Cathar attitudes towards love and divinity.

Some link the appearance of the [[Tarot]] with the Cathars and the Albigenses. It is said that they preached their version of the Gospel using the cards of the Major Arcana.

I have had successes, and am documenting. The root is physics and the systems can be described mathematically, so it may be a key to integrating science and magick. TBD.

The religion known as [[Thelema]] was established with the writing of '''The Book of the Law'''. It was written (or received) by [[Aleister Crowley]] in Cairo, Egypt in the year 1904. It contains three chapters, each of which was written down in one hour, beginning at noon, on April 8th, 9th, and 10th. Crowley claims that the author was an entity named [[Aiwass]], whom he later identified as his own [[Holy Guardian Angel]]. The teachings within this small book are clearly expressed in the Law of Thelema, expressed by these two phrases:

*"Love is the law, love under will" (AL I:57)

Interpretation of this book is considered a matter for the individual, and openly promoting personal ideas about its meaning is strongly discouraged. Although Crowley expressed the desire to see the Law of Thelema promulgated in all areas of society, success in this endeavor is to be based on others willfully following the the good example of Thelemites rather than by evangelization or direct attempts to convert others. "Success is thy proof: argue not; convert not; talk not over much!" (AL III:42)

==The Writing of Liber Legis==

===The Summons===

According to Crowley, the story begins on March 16, 1904, when he tries to “shew the Sylphs” by means of a ritual to his wife, [[Rose Kelly|Rose]]. Although she could see nothing, she did seem to enter into a light trance and repeatedly said, "They're waiting for you!" Since Rose had no interest in [[magick]] or mysticism, he took little interest. However, on the 18th, after invoking [[Thoth]] (the god of knowledge), she mentions [[Horus]] by name as the one waiting for him. Crowley, still skeptical, asks her numerous questions about Horus, which she answers accurately—without having any prior study of the subject. The final proof was Rose’s identification of Horus in the [[Stele of Revealing]], then housed in the Boulak museum, with the exhibit number [[666]].

On March 20, Crowley invokes Horus, “with great success.” Between March 23 and April 8, Crowley has the hieroglyphs on the Stele translated. Also, Rose reveals that her “informant” was not Horus himself, but his messenger, [[Aiwass]]. Finally, on April 7, Rose gives Crowley his instructions—for three days he is to enter the “temple” and write down what he heard between noon and 1:00pm.

===The Writing===

Crowley wrote the Book of the Law on April 8, 9, and 10, between the hours of noon and 1:00pm. He describes the “Voice of Aiwass” as coming from over his left shoulder, as if the speaker were standing in the corner of the room. The voice was said to be passionate, of deep timbre, and musical, without any recognizable accent.

Although he did not look around the room, Crowley had the impression that Aiwass was a body of “fine matter” like a “veil of gauze.” He further describes Aiwass as a “tall, dark man in his thirties, well-knit, active and strong, with the face of a savage king, and eyes veiled lest their gaze should destroy what they saw” (Crowley, 1997).

Crowley also makes it very clear that it was not “automatic writing,” but that the experience was exactly like an actual voice speaking to him. This is evidenced by several errors that the scribe actually had to inquire about. He does admit to the possibility that Aiwass was a manifestation of his own subconscious. But even were this so, he claimed that the message imparted by Aiwass was so beyond human experience or knowledge that it necessitated a praeternatural intelligence that only a god could possess.

In the broadest sense, '''Magick''' is any act designed to cause intentional change. This term is often spelled with a terminal "k" to differentiate it from other practices, such as "stage magic". Magick is not capable of producing "miracles" or violating the physical laws of the universe (i.e. it cannot cause a solar eclipse), although "it is theoretically possible to cause in any object any change of which that object is capable by nature" (Book 4). [[Aleister Crowley]] saw magick as the essential method for a person to reach true understanding of the self and to act according to one's [[True Will]]. Crowley describes this process:

Crowley also provides us with some fundamental statements about the nature of magick (also from ''Book 4''):

For Crowley, the practice of magick—although it equally applies to mundane things, like balancing the checkbook—is essentially to be used for attaining the Knowledge and Conversation of one's [[Holy Guardian Angel]]. Since achieving this state with one's 'Silent Self' can be extremely arduous, magick can be used not only to reach that particular goal, but to clear the way for it as well. For example, if one needed a particular dwelling to perform the operation, one could use magick to obtain a suitable home. Crowley stated that magick that did not have one of these goals as its aim was 'Black Magick' and should be avoided.

King Solomon, in his ''Lesser Key'' of the Goetia, says:

In ''The Magick of Thelema,'' Lon Milo DuQuette expands on Crowley's definition of magick by saying that "conversely, any unwilled action is an unmagical act: reaching for a cigarette; ordering that fourth Martini; or any habitual or reactive behavior that overrides the momentum of one's life focus." He goes on to say that "magick also postulates a universal order—call it God, Nature, the Supreme Being, the Grand Architect of the Universe, the Tao, or just the-way-things-are. Belief in various magical practices has waxed and waned in European and Western history, under pressure from either organized monotheistic religions or from skepticism about the reality of magic, and the ascendancy of scientism. The time of the Emperor Julian of Rome, marked by a reaction against the influence of Christianity, saw a revival of magical practices associated with [[neo-Platonism]] under the guise of [[theurgy]].

=== In the Middle Ages ===
Mediæval authors, under the control of the Church, confined their magic to compilations of wonderlore and collections of spells. [[Albertus Magnus]] was credited, rightly or wrongly, with a number of such compilations. Specifically Christianized varieties of magic were devised at this period. During the early Middle Ages, the cult of [[relic]]s as objects not only of veneration but also of supernatural power arose. Miraculous tales were told of the power of relics of the saints to work [[miracle]]s, not only to heal the sick, but for purposes like swaying the outcome of a battle. The relics had become [[amulet]]s, and various churches strove to purchase scarce or valuable examples, hoping to become places of pilgrimage. As in any other economic endeavor, demand gave rise to supply. Tales of the miracle-working relics of the saints were compiled later into quite popular collections like the ''[[Golden Legend]]'' of [[Jacobus de Voragine]] or the ''Dialogus miraculorum'' of [[Caesar of Heisterbach]].

There were other, officially proscribed varieties of Christianized magic. Renaissance humanism saw a resurgence in [[hermeticism]] and other Neo-Platonic varieties of ceremonial magic. The Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, on the other hand, saw the rise of [[scientism]], in such forms as the substitution of chemistry for alchemy, the dethronement of the [[Ptolemaic theory]] of the universe assumed by astrology, the development of the germ theory of disease, that restricted the scope of applied magic and threatened the belief systems it relied on. European colonialism, which put Westerners in contact with India and Egypt, re-introduced exotic beliefs to Europeans at this time. [[Hinduism]] and [[Egyptian mythology]] frequently feature in nineteenth century magical texts. The late 19th and early 20th centuries EV spawned a large number of [[magical organization]]s, including the [[Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn]], the [[Theosophical Society]], and specifically magical variants on [[Freemasonry]] including [[Ordo Templi Orientis]]. The Golden Dawn represented perhaps the peak of this wave of magic, attracting cultural celebrities like [[Aleister Crowley]], [[William Butler Yeats]], [[Algernon Blackwood]], and [[Arthur Machen]] to its banner.

=== Magic in the twentieth century ===
A further revival of interest in magic was heralded by the repeal, in England, of the last [[Witchcraft Act]] in 1951 EV. This was the cue for [[Gerald Gardner]], now recognized as the ''founder'' of [[Wicca]], to publish his first non-fiction book ''Witchcraft Today'', in which he claimed to reveal the existence of a [[witch]]-cult that dated back to pre-Christian Europe. Gardner's new religion combined magic and [[religion]] in a way that was later to cause people to question the Enlightenment's boundaries between the two subjects.

Gardner's new religion, and many imitators, took off in the atmosphere of the 1960s and 1970s, when the counterculture of the hippies also spawned another period of renewed interest in magic, divination, and other occult practices. The various branches of [[neo-paganism]] and other new [[earth religion]]s that have sprung up in Gardner's wake tend to follow his lead in combining the practice of magic and religion. The trend was continued by some heirs to the counterculture; feminists led the way when some launched an independent revival of goddess worship. Her godform is that of a [[sacred whore]], and her primary symbol is the [[Chalice]] or [[Graal]]. Her consort is [[Chaos]], the “Father of Life” and the male form of the Creative Principle. Babalon is often described as being girt with a sword and riding the [[To Mega Therion|Beast]], with whom [[Aleister Crowley]] personally identified. As [[Aleister Crowley]] wrote, “She rides astride the Beast; in her left hand she holds the reins, representing the passion which unites them. In her right she holds aloft the cup, the Holy Grail aflame with love and death. In this cup are mingled the elements of the sacrament of the Aeon” (''[[Book of Thoth]]''). In a more general sense, Babalon represents the liberated woman and the full expression of the sexual impulse.

==Babalon as the Gateway to the City of Pyramids==
Within the mystical system of Crowley, the adept reaches a final stage where he or she must cross the [[Abyss]], that great wilderness of nothingness and dissolution. [[Choronzon]] is the dweller there, and his job is to trap the traveler in his meaningless world of illusion. However, Babalon is on just the other side, beckoning. If the adept gives himself to her—the symbol of this act is the pouring of the adept’s blood into her graal—he becomes impregnated in her, then to be reborn as a master and a saint that dwells in the [[City of the Pyramids]]. This process is beautifully described in the 15th Aethyr of ''The Vision and the Voice:''

:''As the dancer whirls, she chants in a strange, slow voice, quickening as she goes: Lo! I gather up every spirit that is pure, and weave him into my vesture of flame. I lick up the lives of men, and their souls sparkle from mine eyes. I am the mighty sorceress, the lust of the spirit. And by my dancing I gather for my mother Nuit the heads of all them that are baptized in the waters of life. I am the lust of the spirit that eateth up the soul of man. I have prepared a feast for the adepts, and they that partake thereof shall see God.''

The concept contained within Babalon is that of the mystical ideal, the quest to become one with all. This process necessarily requires refusing to deny anything, becoming perfectly passive the world, allowing all experience to come forward, abandoning oneself into the deluge of sensation. Through this, the mystic comes to direct contact with life, formulating the wine of the [[Graal]], being the distilled understanding derived from raw experience. This process clearly has its analogue in the career of the lady of the night.

Babalon is described in various places in the Thelemic texts, but her most edifying appearance is in ''The Vision and the Voice,'' as part of the vision which explains the function of the Chalice:

:''Let him look upon the cup whose blood is mingled therein, for the wine of the cup is the blood of the saints. Glory unto the Scarlet Woman, Babalon the Mother of Abominations, that rideth upon the Beast, for she hath spilt their blood in every corner of the earth and lo! she hath mingled it in the cup of her whoredom.''

:''With the breath of her kisses hath she fermented it, and it hath become the wine of the Sacrament, the wine of the Sabbath; and in the Holy Assembly hath she poured it out for her worshipers, and they had become drunken thereon, so that face to face they beheld my Father. Thus are they made worthy to become partakers of the Mystery of this holy vessel, for the blood is the life. So sitteth she from age to age, and the righteous are never weary of her kisses, and by her murders and fornications she seduceth the world. Therein is manifested the glory of my Father, who is truth.''

The spelling of her Name as 'Babalon' is not revealed until the vision of the 10th Aethyr, where it is used to banish the forces of [[Choronzon]]. The discovery of the spelling represents Crowley successfully crossing the [[Abyss]], and entering into the Sphere of [[Binah]], which is also attributed to Babalon.

==The Great Whore==

Babalon bears this title because she denies no one, and yet she extracts a great price—the very blood of the adept and his ego-identity as an earthly individual. This aspect of Babalon is described further from the 12th Aethyr:

:''This is the Mystery of Babylon, the Mother of Abominations, and this is the mystery of her adulteries, for she hath yielded up herself to everything that liveth, and hath become a partaker in its mystery. And because she hath made her self the servant of each, therefore is she become the mistress of all. Not as yet canst thou comprehend her glory.''

==The office of the Scarlet Woman==

Although Crowley often wrote that Babalon and the Scarlet Woman are one, there are also many instances where the Scarlet Woman is seen more as a representative or physical manifestation of the universal feminine principle. In a footnote to [[Liber Reguli]], Crowley mentions that of the “Gods of the Aeon,” the Scarlet Woman and the Beast are “the earthly emissaries of those Gods.” He then writes in ''Commentaries:''

:''It is necessary to say here that The Beast appears to be a definite individual; to wit, the man Aleister Crowley. But the Scarlet Woman is an officer replaceable as need arises. Thus to this present date of writing, Anno XVI, Sun in Sagittarius, there have been several holders of the title.''

Aleister Crowley believed that many of his lovers were playing a cosmic role, even to the point of fulfilling prophesy. The following is a list of women that he considered to have been (or might have been) Scarlet Women (quotes are from ''Commentaries''):

==As the Great Mother==
Within the [[Gnostic Mass]], Babalon is mentioned in the [[Gnostic Creed]]:

Babalon is identified with [[Binah]] on the [[Tree of Life]], the sphere that represents the Great Sea and the mother-goddesses [[Isis]], [[Bhavani]], and [[Muat]]. Moreover, she represents all physical mothers. Sabazius and Helena (1998) write:

:''BABALON, as the Great Mother, represents MATTER, a word which is derived from the Latin word for Mother. She is the physical mother of each of us, the one who provided us with material flesh to clothe our naked spirits; She is the Archetypal Mother, the Great Yoni, the Womb of all that lives through the flowing of Blood; She is the Great Sea, the Divine Blood itself which cloaks the World and which courses through our veins; and She is Mother Earth, the Womb of All Life that we know.''

The 49th chapter of Crowley's ''Book of Lies'', called "Waratah-Blossoms", is dedicated to Babalon:

===Crowley's Commentary===
On this chapter, Crowley writes:

:[[49]] is the square of [[7]]. 7 is the passive and feminine number. The chapter should be read in connection with Chapter [[31]] for IT now reappears. The chapter heading, the Waratah, is a voluptuous scarlet flower, common in Australia, and this connects the chapter with Chapters 28 and 29; but this is only an allusion, for the subject of the chapter is OUR LADY BABALON, who is conceived as the feminine counterpart of IT. This does not agree very well with the common or orthodox theogony of Chapter [[11]]; but it is to be explained by the dithyrambic nature of the chapter. In paragraph 3 NO MAN is of course [[NEMO]], the [[Master of the Temple]], [[Liber 418]] will explain most of the allusions in this chapter. In paragraphs 5 and 6 the author frankly identifies himself with the [[To Mega Therion|BEAST]] referred to in the book, and in the Apocalypse, and in [[The Book of the Law|LIBER LEGIS]]. In paragraph 6 the word "angel" may refer to his mission, and the word "[[lion-serpent]]" to the sigil of his ascending decan. ([[Path of Teth|Teth]] = [[Snake]] = [[spermatozoon]] and [[Leo]] in the [[Zodiac]], which like Teth itself has the snake-form. theta first written {Sun} = [[Lingam-Yoni]] and [[Sol]].) Paragraph 7 explains the theological difficulty referred to above. There is only one symbol, but this symbol has many names: of those names BABALON is the holiest. It is the name referred to in [[Liber Legis]], 1, 22. It will be noticed that the figure, or [[sigil]], of BABALON is a [[seal]] upon a ring, and this ring is upon the forefinger of IT. This identifies further the symbol with itself. It is...said to be the seal upon the tombs of them that she hath slain, that is, of the Masters of the Temple."

==Biblical origins==
Principally, the godform of Babalon seems to be derived from a scene in the [[Book of Revelations|Revelations]], a source of much inspiration in Crowley's cosmology. In "Revelations", we find this passage:

And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.'' :— Revelations 17:3-6

==Etymology==
The name '''Babalon''' may derive from several sources. Firstly, there is the obvious resemblance to [[Babylon]]. Babylon was a major city in [[Mesopotamia]], part of the [[Sumerian]] culture. Coincidentally, the [[Sumerian]] deity [[Ishtar]] bears an uncanny resemblance to the Crowleyan Babalon. Babylon itself is a city that is referred to in several places in the Bible, usually as an image of a once-glorious paradise that has fallen into ruin, a warning against the evils of decadence:

A second possibility is from the [[Enochian]] word ''BABALOND'', which is translated ''a harlot''. This is most probable, given that ''The Vision and the Voice'' was obtained by Crowley through skrying, after he had conducted invocations using the [[Enochian]] system of magick.

Crowley probably chose the spelling of ''Babalon'' for its Qabalistic significance. By replacing the letter 'y' with an 'a', the word 'AL' appears in the center. The whole then naturally breaks into ''Bab-al-on''. 'Bab' is Arabic for a door, or gate. 'AL' is the Key of [[Liber Legis]], and is also a Qabalistic title of God, meaning 'The One' in Hebrew. 'On' is the name of the [[Egyptian]] city that the Greeks called [[Heliopolis]], the [[City of the Pyramids]]. By [[gematria]], Babalon sums to 156, which is the number of squares on each of the elemental Enochian tablets of Dee and Kelly. These tablets are themselves identified with the City of the Pyramids, with each square being the base of a pyramid.

==Baphomet and the Knights Templar==

'''Baphomet''' first became known when the [[Knights Templar]] were tried for blasphemy, homosexuality, and devil worship by the Inquisition in the 13th century. According to confessions given by members, Baphomet was an idol that took the form of either a large head or a cat. Based on the various testimonies of the Templars, no precise description of Baphomet came to light. It is even possible that Baphomet never existed at all for the Knights, or that multiple idols might have been involved.

==Baphomet and Eliphas Lévi==

Baphomet gained new fame with the 19th century mystic [[Eliphas Levi|Eliphas Lévi]], who drew the now infamous image that is often taken for the modern Christian version of [[Satan]]. However, Lévi did not believe that Baphomet was in any way equal to this Devil, saying this icon "cannot be confounded with fabulous images of Satan." Further, he says "But the adorers of [Baphomet] do not consider...that it is a representation of the devil; on the contrary, for them it is that of the god [[Pan]], the god of our modern schools of philosophy...the god of the primitive [[Gnosticism|Gnostic]] schools" (Levi, 1995, p. 308).

According to Levi, Baphomet was symbolic of what he called the [[Great Magical Agent]], which can be defined as the universal life-force. This Astral Light is also the force that adepts use in magical operations. Common analogies are the [[Hinduism|Hindu]] [[Kundalini]] and the [[First Matter]] of [[alchemy]].

In ''Transcendal Magic,'' Lévi explains the symbolism of his famous drawing:

:"Moreover, the sign of occultism is made with both hands, pointing upward to the white moon of [[Chesed]], and downward to the black moon of [[Geburah]]. This sign expresses the perfect concord between mercy and justice. One of the arms is feminine and other masculine, as in the [[Androgyne]] of Khunrath, whose attributes we have combined with those of our goat, since they are one and the same symbol. The torch of intelligence burning between the horns is the magical light of universal equilibrium; it is also the type of soul exalted above matter, as the flame cleaves to the torch. The monstrous head of the animal expresses horror of sin, for which the mateial agent, alone responsible, must alone and for ever bear the penalty, because the soul is impassible in its nature and can suffer only by materialising. [[Aleister Crowley|Crowley]] said that Baphomet was representative of the [[Babe in the Egg]], or the original being, which was bisexual, and symbolized "arcane perfection" (Crowley 1997). He further says of Baphomet, "this Goat is called also Strength, and standeth at the Meridian at the Sunrise of Spring, and it is his Nature to leap upon the Mountains. So therefore is he a symbol of true [[Magick]]" (Crowley 1995).

In ''The Book of Lies'' (1913), the 33rd chapter is entitled "Baphomet." It puports to transmit [[Knights Templar|Templar]] Grand Master [[Jacobus Burgundus Molensis|Jacques DeMolay's]] description of God under the figure of the double-headed eagle used as a symbol of Scottish Rite [[Freemasonry]]. It also alludes to "the GOD that is ass-headed," leaving it unclear whether Baphomet is to be identified with either, neither, or both the eagle and the ass-headed figures.

In the ''Book of Thoth'' (1981), Crowley identifies Baphomet with the [[Tarot]] card "[[Tarot:The Devil|The Devil]]" and attributes him to the Greek god Pan, the All-Begetter. In this context, Baphomet represents the "creative energy in its most material form...the divine madness of Spring" where he is exalted in the manifested, material world — a supreme appreciator of existence and the power of creation.

The name Baphomet was taken by Aleister Crowley when he became the Outer Head of the Order (or OHO) for OTO.

The number 11 means, in the [[Tree of Life]], the Sphere of [[Daath]]. In the Hebraic Language [[Daath]] means "knowledge" or "Abyss", being the [[Sephira]] located in the limit between the Superior Triad ([[Kether]], [[Chokmah]] and [[Binah]]) and the [[Sephiroth]] located at the more manifested world. [[Daath]] is where takes place phenomenon usually known as the "[[Black Night of the Soul]]", when the adept stands at the mental state represented by the [[daemon]] [[Choronzon]]. Transpass this state of the mind is essential to reach the consecration of the [[Great Work]]. To reach [[Daath]] is necessary, first, to take contact with the [[Holy Guardian Angel]], who conducts the adept and helps him to reach the [[Abyss]] safely.

This number also have the symbolism of the union of the [[Microcosmos]] and the [[Macrocosmos]], as the sum of the 5 and the 6, being the 5 related to the [[Pentagram]] and the 6 related to the [[Hexagram]]. So, 11 joins the meanings of both the correlations and means the All.

Keter is one of the magickal names of an [http://www.thefreedictionary.com/autarkic autarkic] magickian currently located near Austin, Texas. Keter also occasionally uses the magickal name Tzaddi.

Born Sol 9°53'13” Gemini, Luna 28°57'01 Sagittarius, dies Mercurii, and with a completely intact magickal memory, I was adopted under extremely suspicious circumstances into a tiny family consisting of an invalid and prescription-addicted mother and elderly set of maternal grandparents and no extended family. The pertinent facts of this were that my grandfather was a leader of the inward aspect of a well-known fraternal order, my grandmother a spectacularly failed initiate, and my mother the predictably tragic result of the combination.

Because I was born a magickian, I did not realize that others were not like me and did things one can do with a really good magickal memory (like starting to read at an extremely early age without being taught, assuming visible god-forms, or picking up a properly-shaped stick, pronouncing it the Staff of the Magus, and proceeding to wield it as one), so I was promptly awarded the titles "the Beast" and "the Anti-Christ" by my grandmother, whose particular failure manifested as rabid and frequently violent fundamentalist Christianity. Let’s just say that things predictably went downhill from there and yielded the modern minimalist remix of a story you’ve heard before. (Somebody out there has one hell of a dry sense of humour and I’m afraid it’s me.)

I do almost no ritual magick in this lifetime; it has become rather the “court of last resort.” My studies in this lifetime have concentrated primarily on causality and specifically the ability to actually invert the same systems traditionally used for divination and interpretation of causal trends (Tarot, Kabbalah, Gematria) to actively bias the probabilities rather than passively report on them. I have had successes, and am documenting. The root is physics and the systems can be described mathematically, so it may be a key to integrating science and magick. TBD.
